I was able to break away and have lunch today at the new Saladworks that opened up in north central Austin just last week. Think Subway but for salads, through they prepare paninis, wraps and soups as well. The company is a franchise out of Pennsylvania but locally owned. I found out about the restaurant from a marketer who was delivering menus in the area near our fitness studio.
The concept of assemble your own salads (well you don’t physically assemble it, they do) isn’t unique of course but it is nice to have more healthier options for lunch and dinner. Being new the restaurant is very nice and clean. They have signature salads or you can create your own with your choice of green and 5 toppings.
I tried their Buffalo Bleu salad and it came with a whole wheat roll. It was a decent salad but I will admit it could have have a lot more chicken. The salads are a little on the higher price averaging $8.25 but the portion was filling. I was told by the marketer who visited that they had plenty of nutritional information but when I asked in the restaurant I was told to go online to see it all. I think it would be helpful for them to at least have one permanent copy of the information for customers to see.
I ate inside the restaurant and was a little disappointed in the serving ware. They served the salad in a fairly large bowl (yes a large, healthy salad is good), but it was a disposable, customized plastic bowl that had no option to be recycled in the restaurant. Even if it was recyclable it should be more earth friendly to have nice reusable bowls that can be washed. It seemed wasteful to me.
The place was nice and the salad was decent but it definitely had a “chain” feel to it. I will most likely return and since they just opened I hope to see a few positive changes on my next visit. If you try it out let us know what you think!
